ACLU of Utah Website User Interface Casestudy

The ACLU of Utah is a nonprofit organization that advocates for individuals who feel their rights may have been violated. Our goal was to better organize the information and create a more clear user path for those looking to seek help or file a complaint.

Problem

Currently the ACLU Utah website contains an overwhelming amount of information that appears random and unorganized. Job postings are listed alongside upcoming legislation along with recent news stories. Depending on who the user is and their intentions for coming to the site they may not have a clear path to the information they require.

Research

Our research was to define a clear user flow, define the paramaters of our user test and then begin to test. Our findings were that while most users did eventually find the information that we were testing them for, they found the site to be confusing and overwhelming.

Solution

Our goal was to create a more intuitive layout with a clear path for individuals who may be looking to file a complaint, make a donation, or may be looking for additional information about their legal rights and whether or not their rights may have been violated. This was accomplished via user research, developing prototypes, testing and iterating based on our findings.

User Flow

We developed two simplified user flows (donate & file a complaint) so that we could test the efficacy of our assumptions about the website and its organization.

UI Wireframes

Initial group wireframes that we pulled various elements from each to develop our initial group lo-fidelity wireframes from.

Final UI Prototypes

On the left is our initial group lo-fidelity wireframe and on the right is the final hi-fidelity prototype.

Summary

After our prototyping and user tests we were pleased to learn that the tests were successful and revealed that we had developed a more clear and user friendly interface. There were however, a few minor issues that the tests also revealed to us which were implemented in our final iteration.

Now that we have a more clear and better defined user flow for the donate and request help sections of the ACLU Utah site, our next area of focus would be to see what improvements could be made to the low-cost and free resources section.
